I knew the quiet, gentlemanly, old-school Gerald M. Fitzgerald when he was an 82 year old fellow of St. Edmund's College, Cambridge, and I was a much younger postdoctoral researcher into 18th century English literature in 1969 to 1971. He was an understated, elegant friend with a little chuckle and an easy, polite manner. J. A. W. Rembert, Ph.D. (Cantab.), Charleston, S.C.
